17th & 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers & 19th Century British Library NewspapersGale has partnered with the British Library to create one of the richest collections of primary source material in the world. Unparalleled in depth and scope, British Library Newspapers consists of two major collections from the British Library which span 300 years of newspaper publishing in the UK; 17th and 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers and 19th Century British Library Newspapers. The two collections combined contain nearly 3 million pages and 40 million articles and provide an enormous resource for research on all subjects including history, literature, social sciences, business and economics and the history of journalism and advertising.
17th and 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers17th and 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers represents the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media available from the British Library and includes more than 1,000 pamphlets, proclamations, newsbooks and newspapers from the period. This collection helps researchers chart the development of the newspaper as we now know it, beginning with irregularly published transcriptions of Parliamentary debates and proclamations to coffee house newsbooks, finally arriving at newspaper in its current form.
Gathered by Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817), a notable scholar and son of a well-known music historian of the same name, this collection covers more than 200 years of accounts, explanations, and points of views. More than 700 bound volumes of newspapers relate political, educational and economic situations – including English provincial, Irish, Scottish and a handful of papers from British colonies, in the Americas and Asia – relate political, educational and economic situations chosen from more than three dozen cities.
These rare and restricted documents are now available online and students and academics can conduct full-text searches of nearly 1 million pages from approximately 1,270 titles spanning from Parliamentary papers and the London daily news to the latest English humour of the 1600s.
19th Century British Library Newspapers19th Century British Library Newspapers has been developed by Gale in partnership with the British Library and offers national, regional and local 19th century British newspapers, taken directly from the holdings of the British Library. The collection contains over two million pages from forty eight titles and unlocks extensive newspaper content which is invaluable for the researching and studying of 19th century history.
The papers have been carefully selected by an editorial board from the British Library whose purpose was to provide a broad yet detailed view of British life in the 19th century; from business to sport, from politics to entertainment and the arts. The collection is made up of daily and weekly publications and reflects Britain’s growing role as a superpower in the 19th century world.
19th Century British Library Newspapers also offers contextual essays regarding the role of newspapers in the Victorian age, bibliographic headnotes and a chronological overview.
